Multichannel Eye Movement Integration(MEMI) is an expansion of the original eye movement integration (EMI) technique introduced in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas, two master trainers in the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)field.  EMI was not developed as a clinical model, because it was based solely on NLP theory and principles. Because Dr. Deninger is a certified NLP Trainer as well as a licensed professional counselor, when he created MEMI, he expanded EMI’s simple procedures into a clinical trauma therapy to be taught to licensed mental health professionals. In that process, he was able to retain the markedly successful EMI strategies and procedures drawn from NLP.

Mike Deninger, PhD, MA, LPC, CCTP, NBCCH, CTNLP & MEMI

Mike Deninger is a native of Western New York where he was raised in a large working-class family. He holds a BA in English, MS in Education of the Deaf, PhD in Special Education Administration and MA in Mental Health Counseling (in that order). As an administrator in deaf education, Mike rose through the administrative ranks at Gallaudet University until he was appointed Dean of Pre-College Programs. This was arguably the top position in the education of elementary and secondary deaf children in the U.S. But all was not right with him. In a 2011 memoir, Mike shared the reasons behind his transition from a top position educating deaf children to his current role of trauma therapist, author and master trainer in mental health.

During this transformation, Mike overcame an alcohol addiction, confronted PTSD stemming from childhood sexual abuse and came out as a gay man. He subsequently established a private practice specializing in trauma and earned trainer certifications in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Eye Movement Integration. As a result of his personal and professional experiences, Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought-after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021, his treatment innovations resulted in the publication of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment. Mike now provides trainings, consultations and mentoring in this simple but effective PTSD approach through Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson. He can be reached through here .

Soon after launching MEMI as a clinical model in 2021, it became apparent that the approach might also be used by professionals without mental health preparation and licensure, but who nevertheless routinely address trauma and toxic stress Currently Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson and its affiliates offer two types of MEMI non-clinical training leading to certification. The first is designed for Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioners, Hypnotists and Life Coaches who hold current certifications in their respective fields. The second course is designed for individuals who are employed by or affiliated with crisis support service organizations, e.g. first responders or mental health support personnel working in municipal peer support programs, body stabilization workers, military or veterans and non-profit workers and volunteers.

Course Description

As explained in this section’s introduction, Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) is a descendant of the original eye movement integration (EMI) technique created by Steve and Connirae Andreas, developers and master trainers in the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) field.  EMI was not a clinical model, because it was based solely on NLP theory and principles. The MEMI certification for first responders described here represents a return to EMI’s origins in NLP. The course’s non-clinical nature prepares learners who are not licensed mental health practitioners to provide memory reprocessing services in a variety of settings where this type of assistance was not previously available. The MEMI model was created by Dr. Mike Deninger, a certified NLP trainer and Licensed Professional Counselor.

This MEMI First Responder program and certification require completion of five-days of instruction and 10 consultation hours following the course. The course is designed for individuals employed by or affiliated with crisis support service providers. This includes first responders, mental health support personnel, body stabilization workers, military or veterans, and non-profit workers and volunteers. The certification requirements are divided into three separate courses.

Stress and Trauma Care Course. The first course—Stress & Trauma Care—is a two-day introduction to the neurology and biology of stress and trauma, covering topics such as how humans adapt and change, factors that make change difficult, how to downshift the human nervous system, and ethical decision making. This is a required course for all first responder types, unless they are licensed mental health practitioners. The course is optional for those individuals. To be awarded a course completion certificate, students must attend all sessions and pass a Final Quiz with 80% accuracy.

At the beginning of the Stress and Trauma Care course, students are asked to register a user account on the www.multichanneleyemovementintegration.com  website:

How to Set Up a MEMI User Account

  1. Visit multichanneleyemovementintegration.com. and open an account by clicking on the “Login” button in the upper right corner of the site’s home page and proceed to register a new account. Be sure to include your full name as you would like it to appear on your certificates. If you do not include your full name where requested, your certificates will be generated without a name.

If you have questions or experience problems, you can email us at [email protected].

MEMI for First Responders Course. This is a three-day course tailored to First Responders. The first two days cover MEMI’s theory, protocol, procedures and related topics. The third day is devoted to practicing the MEMI protocol. In most cases, the Stress and Trauma Course and the MEMI Course will be taught over five consecutive days. Although the courses could be scheduled separately, the trauma care course will always precede the MEMI course for First Responders.

Students are taught MEMI’s Structure of Experience theoretical model and its five supporting presuppositions, as well as the technique’s eye movements and strategic vocalizations. Participants also receive instruction in other NLP constructs and strategies, including eye accessing cues, problem states, resource states, associated and dissociated views, representational systems, submodalities, resource anchoring, visual kinesthetic dissociation and therapeutic dissociation. Recent neuroscience findings explicating the role of eye movements in calming limbic dysregulation are reviewed and discussed. MEMI’s simple procedure for measuring sensory reactions to problems called the intensity scale (I-Scale) and the subjective units of distress scale (SUD) are also taught.

A captioned videotape of an actual MEMI treatment session with a severely distressed client augments the instruction provided. Two other video demonstrations portray MEMI sessions with volunteers, one conducted in person and the other via Zoom. Case studies of MEMI’s use with other clients are also featured, along with multiple vignettes of actual client work.

Learning Objectives

  1. Cite the three steps in obtaining MEMI Non-clinical certification.
  2. Explain MEMI’s theoretical model, presuppositions and hypothesis.
  3. Demonstrate how to perform MEMI’s five basic eye movements.
  4. Explain two differences between traditional and Polyvagal theories.
  5. Describe the function of limbic system parts during the stress response.
  6. Explain the role of eye movements in amygdala deactivations.
  7. Demonstrate how to perform MEMI’s four eye movement sets.
  8. Summarize the origins of all eye movement therapies.
  9. List and describe how to perform the 10 steps in the MEMI protocol.
  10. List and explain the four requirements for MEMI treatment success.

To complete this course successfully, students must attend all sessions and pass the Final Quiz with a score of 80% or better. When the course is completed and the quiz is passed, students receive an email with their course completion certificate and a second email with instructions for how to schedule the 10 consultation hours.

MEMI Level I Consultation Course. All MEMI certifications require the completion of 10 hours of individual or group consultations with a licensed MEMI trainer. The consultations are designed to provide feedback and support to students as they begin to use MEMI’s protocol. Although this is not a traditional course per se, the consultations are called a course to accommodate the requirements of our automated system. When a student has completed this consultation course, their trainer will mark the course as complete in their user account. That will trigger the sending of two emails. One will contain a Consultation Course Certificate and the other will explain how to apply for MEMI Level I First Responder Certification.

This certification is only offered by MEMI trainer Brian Simmons through his company HC Solutions in cooperation with Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson (TCTT). HC Solutions teaches the five-day course and manages the required consultations. TCTT provides automated recordkeeping support and manages the certification process through an organization called MEMI International. Questions about this program can be addressed to Brian Simmons at [email protected]. A brochure describing the program can also be viewed at:
