This course presents the history of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) from its roots in Neuro-Linguistic Programming’s (NLP’s) Eye Movement Integration procedure to its current form as an effective multi-use therapy for PTSD and lesser traumas. Unlike other eye movement therapies, MEMI’s origins are clear, its procedures are uncomplicated and the therapy is easy to learn and use.

The course begins with a review of DSM-5’s diagnostic criteria and is followed by descriptions of MEMI’s theoretical model, presuppositions undergirding the model, and the therapy’s hypothesis. The course also reviews recent brain research concerning the role of eye movements in deactivating the limbic system during the stress response and relates these findings to MEMI’s theoretical underpinnings. The importance of autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation in treating trauma is also explored in the context of both traditional ANS theory and the more recent Polyvagal Theory.

Participants receive practical instruction in the use of MEMI’s: 1.) theoretical model and expanded 10-step protocol; 2.) step-by-step procedures; 3.) scripts and tips for therapists; 4.) basic eye movements 5.) eye movement sets; 6.) worksheet for recording session results; 7.) strategies for interrupting client abreactions; 8.) assessment techniques (Intensity Scale, SUD Scale and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5); 9.) a rubric for scoring the PCL-5; and 10.) tips for treating phobias, substance abuse and personal failures.

Captioned videotapes of an actual MEMI treatment session with a complex trauma client amplify the instruction provided. Additionally, a video demonstration of MEMI being used with a volunteer depicts how MEMI therapy can be used with a subject who is distressed by an annoying habit. Case studies of MEMI’s use with several clients are also featured, along with multiple vignettes of actual client work.

One important note: In this newly revised Level I MEMI course the steps in the protocol are reordered and slightly different than they appear in the MEMI book published in 2021. But they do represent current practice, so please make a note of that.

Mike Deninger, PhD, MA, LPC, CCTP, NBCCH, CTNLP & MEMI

Mike Deninger is a native of Western New York where he was raised in a large working-class family. He holds a BA in English, MS in Education of the Deaf, PhD in Special Education Administration and MA in Mental Health Counseling (in that order). As an administrator in deaf education, Mike rose through the administrative ranks at Gallaudet University until he was appointed Dean of Pre-College Programs. This was arguably the top position in the education of elementary and secondary deaf children in the nation. But all was not right with him. In a 2011 memoir, Mike shared the reasons behind his transition from a top position educating deaf children to his current role of trauma therapist, author and master trainer in mental health.

During this transformation, Mike overcame an alcohol addiction, confronted PTSD stemming from childhood sexual abuse and came out as a gay man. He subsequently established a private practice specializing in trauma and earned trainer certifications in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Eye Movement Integration. As a result of his personal and professional experiences, Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021, his treatment innovations resulted in the publication of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment. Certification Procedures

Description

This certification program prepares licensed mental health and medical professionals to effectively use the Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) protocol. This certification attests that the certified individual has completed the course of instruction, passed a test of course content with 80% accuracy, has received mentoring in the model’s application, and has been recommended for certification as a level one practitioner by a licensed MEMI trainer. Its purpose is to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary to apply the MEMI model—from its theory to its protocol—when working with clients with PTSD, acute stress or lesser traumas.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS CERTIFICATION DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COURSE. YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE THE COURSE SEPARATELY.

Professional standards required for certification:

State or National license as a medical or mental health professional—or the equivalent if practicing outside of the United States as a:

  • Medical professional
  • Psychologist
  • Clinical Social Worker
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Licensed Masters level addiction counselor
  • Psychiatrist
  • Psychiatric Nurse
  • BSN nurses
  • Registered nurses

Individuals outside the U. S. can qualify for this certification if the laws in their jurisdiction authorize other professional types (e.g. NLP practitioners, hypnotherapy providers or life coaches) to provide mental health services, or to independently bill insurance companies.

The applicant must:

  • Be in good standing with their State Licensing Board .
  • Have not been denied application or renewal of professional membership in local, state, or national associations within the past 5 years.

Educational standard:

A graduate degree in a mental health, medicine, addiction or related field (or the equivalent if outside of the United States)

Required documentation

  1. A copy of the candidate’s license (if in the United States)
  2. A copy of certification or completion of professional training in countries that do not require licensure, or evidence that they meet the educational standards for mental health practice within their country

Certification Procedure

STEP 1 – Register for and complete MEMI Level I Clinical Course, whether in-person, livestreamed, or as a webinar

STEP 2 – Complete the final certification quiz with a passing grade of 80% or above

  1. The test can be taken immediately following course completion or at a later date.
  2. It takes about 1 hour to complete.
  3. The test can be taken more than once at no additional charge.

STEP 3 – Complete 10 hours of coaching with a licensed MEMI trainer

STEP 4 – Register and make Online payment of certification fee

STEP 5 – Complete the registration form and upload the required documents as instructed.

Required Documents

  • A copy of the candidate’s professional license (when applicable and if in the United States)
  • MEMI course completion certificate (downloaded after course completion).
  • MEMI coaching completion certificate (you should have received it in an email when you completed the coaching sessions).
  • A Document showing completion of professional training in countries that do not require licensure, as well as evidence that the educational standards for practice within the country have been met
