Multichannel Eye Movement Integration

American Sign Language Clinician’s Level I Webinar

Course Description

This course has been designed for American Sign Language (ASL) proficient practitioners who provide services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. ASL is the language of instruction and captioning and English voice over are included on all the videos. Course completion is one requirement for MEMI certification, along with completion of 10 hours of coaching from a licensed MEMI trainer.

This course traces the history of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) from its roots in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) theory to its current form as an effective multi-use therapy for PTSD and lesser traumas. Unlike other eye movement therapies, MEMI’s origins are clear, its procedures are uncomplicated and it’s easy to learn.

The course reviews recent brain science and the role of the limbic system in the fight or flight response. The importance of autonomic nervous (ANS) system regulation in treating trauma is explored in the context of both traditional ANS theory and the more recent Polyvagal Theory. The importance of client-affirming strategies and body regulation in trauma symptom resolution are stressed.

Participants receive practical instruction in the use of MEMI’s:
1.) theoretical model and expanded 10-step protocol;
2.) comprehensive procedures;
3.) scripts and tips for therapists;
4.) basic eye movements
5.) eye movement sets;
6.) worksheet for recording session results;
7.) strategies for interrupting client abreactions;
8.) assessment techniques (Intensity Scale, SUD Scale and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5);
9.) rubric for scoring the PCL-5;
10.) tips for treating phobias, substance abuse and personal failures.

Captioned videotapes of an actual MEMI treatment session with a complex trauma client amplify the instruction provided. Additionally, two video demonstrations of MEMI being used with Deaf volunteers exhibit how MEMI therapy can be used with DHH clients with few adjustments. Case studies of MEMI’s use with several clients are also featured, along with multiple vignettes of actual client work.

The resource guide to this course is included at the end of the instructional modules.

Mike Deninger, PhD, MA, LPC, CCTP, NBCCH, CTNLP & MEMI

Mike Deninger is a native of Western New York where he was raised in a large working-class family. He holds a BA in English, MS in Education of the Deaf, PhD in Special Education Administration and MA in Mental Health Counseling (in that order). As an administrator in deaf education, Mike rose through the administrative ranks at Gallaudet University until he was appointed Dean of Pre-College Programs. This was arguably the top position in the education of elementary and secondary deaf children in the nation. But all was not right with him. In a 2011 memoir, Mike shared the reasons behind his transition from a top position educating deaf children to his current role of trauma therapist, author and master trainer in mental health.

During this transformation, Mike overcame an alcohol addiction, confronted PTSD stemming from childhood sexual abuse and came out as a gay man. He subsequently established a private practice specializing in trauma and earned trainer certifications in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Eye Movement Integration. As a result of his personal and professional experiences, Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021, his treatment innovations resulted in the publication of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment. Mike now provides trainings, consultations and mentoring in this simple but effective PTSD approach through Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson. He can be reached through here .

Certification Procedures

Description

This certification prepares learners who are not licensed mental health practitioners to provide MEMI memory reprocessing services in a variety of settings where this type of assistance has not previously been available.  The certification is designed for individuals employed in or affiliated with a crisis support services provider. This would include the services provided by life coaches, hypnotists, NLP practitioners, first responders, mental health support personnel, body stabilization workers, military or veteran personnel, and non-profit workers and volunteers. This certification attests that the individual has completed the requisite MEMI ASL Clinician’s Level I course, received a passing grade on a test of MEMI course content and completed 10 hours of mentoring in the MEMI model’s application.

Purpose of this certification

Provides evidence that basic knowledge of the MEMI model has been imparted and that 10 hours of mentoring in how to address the effects of psychosocial stressors using this sensory-based protocol has been completed.

The benefit of having this certification

This certification establishes that the individual has been adequately trained to: safely administer the MEMI protocol, identify and manage distress-driven reactions, recommend coping skills, employ grounding techniques, and know when to seek outside assistance or provide medical service referrals.
