Multichannel Eye Movement Integration(MEMI) is an expansion of the original eye movement integration (EMI) technique introduced in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas, two master trainers in the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)field.  EMI was not developed as a clinical model, because it was based solely on NLP theory and principles. Because Dr. Deninger is a certified NLP Trainer as well as a licensed professional counselor, when he created MEMI, he expanded EMI’s simple procedures into a clinical trauma therapy to be taught to licensed mental health professionals. In that process, he was able to retain the markedly successful EMI strategies and procedures drawn from NLP.

Mike Deninger, PhD, MA, LPC, CCTP, NBCCH, CTNLP & MEMI

Mike Deninger is a native of Western New York where he was raised in a large working-class family. He holds a BA in English, MS in Education of the Deaf, PhD in Special Education Administration and MA in Mental Health Counseling (in that order). As an administrator in deaf education, Mike rose through the administrative ranks at Gallaudet University until he was appointed Dean of Pre-College Programs. This was arguably the top position in the education of elementary and secondary deaf children in the U.S. But all was not right with him. In a 2011 memoir, Mike shared the reasons behind his transition from a top position educating deaf children to his current role of trauma therapist, author and master trainer in mental health.

During this transformation, Mike overcame an alcohol addiction, confronted PTSD stemming from childhood sexual abuse and came out as a gay man. He subsequently established a private practice specializing in trauma and earned trainer certifications in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Eye Movement Integration. As a result of his personal and professional experiences, Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought-after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021, his treatment innovations resulted in the publication of Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment. Mike now provides trainings, consultations and mentoring in this simple but effective PTSD approach through Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson. He can be reached through here .

Soon after launching MEMI as a clinical model in 2021, it became apparent that the approach might also be used by professionals without mental health preparation and licensure, but who nevertheless routinely address trauma and toxic stress Currently Trauma Counseling & Training of Tucson and its affiliates offer two types of MEMI non-clinical training leading to certification. The first is designed for Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioners, Hypnotists and Life Coaches who hold current certifications in their respective fields. The second course is designed for individuals who are employed by or affiliated with crisis support service organizations, e.g. first responders or mental health support personnel working in municipal peer support programs, body stabilization workers, military or veterans and non-profit workers and volunteers.

Course Description

As explained in the introduction to non-clinical courses, Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) is an expansion of the original eye movement integration (EMI) technique introduced in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas, two master trainers in the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) field.  EMI was not developed as a clinical model, because it was based solely on NLP theory and principles. Because Dr. Deninger is a certified NLP Trainer as well as a licensed professional counselor, he expanded EMI’s simple procedures into a clinical trauma therapy to be taught to licensed mental health professionals.

This course for NLP Practitioners, Hypnotists and Life Coaches represents a return to EMI’s roots in NLP, because all clinical topics have been removed from this MEMI protocol. This course and its associated certification prepare learners who are not licensed mental health practitioners to provide MEMI memory reprocessing services in a variety of settings where this type of assistance was not previously available.

Students are taught MEMI’s Structure of Experience model and its five supporting presuppositions, as well as the technique’s procedures, eye movements and strategic vocalizations. Participants also receive instruction in other NLP topics and strategies found in this protocol, including eye accessing cues, problem states, resource states, associated and dissociated views, representational systems, submodalities, resource anchoring, visual kinesthetic dissociation and therapeutic dissociation. Scripts for providers to use during the procedure are also provided. Recent neuroscience research explicating the role of eye movements in calming limbic dysregulation is presented. A simple method for measuring sensory reactions to trauma called the intensity scale (I-Scale) and the subjective units of distress scale are also taught.

A captioned videotape of an actual MEMI treatment session with a complex trauma client amplifies the instruction provided. Two other video demonstrations portray MEMI sessions with volunteers—one conducted in-person and the other on Zoom. Case studies of MEMI’s use with several clients are also featured, along with multiple vignettes of actual client work.
